What is a Ductless Mini Split?

Ductless mini splits are some of the newer heating and cooling technology developments. In many homes, central heating and air conditioning are the method of choice for climate control. In other homes, boilers provide hot water for radiators and baseboard heaters, but each system has obvious drawbacks. With the development of ductless heating and cooling, homeowners have a choice about how to heat and cool their homes. Here are three benefits of switching to ductless mini splits.

Lowers Energy Bills

save money Homeowners often share common concerns about high energy bills and the environmental impact of their homes, all leading to the same goal: energy efficiency. Unfortunately, many popular central heating and cooling systems don’t quite hit the mark, causing energy costs to soar and the home's eco-friendliness to plummet. A significant culprit in this inefficiency is ductwork. Even with modern insulation techniques, ductwork can still suffer from leaks that let conditioned air escape. Moreover, some energy is inevitably lost during transit, regardless of how thick the insulation is.

With ductless mini splits, energy is preserved much more efficiently. When ductwork isn’t necessary, there is less opportunity for energy losses, leading to lower bills without resorting to keeping the thermostat uncomfortably low. Additionally, ductless mini-split heat pumps are the most common type, allowing homeowners to stop relying on fossil fuels for heat.

Easier Installation Than Other Styles

Ductwork can be bulky and costly, making installation challenging. Similarly, the plumbing required for boilers and radiators often takes a significant amount of time and can be tricky to maintain. In contrast, ductless mini-splits require much less infrastructure to operate effectively. By simply cutting a few holes in the wall to conceal the necessary piping and mounting the blower units, homeowners can quickly set up a reliable heating and cooling system.

This versatility enables quick and straightforward installation in standard homes while also offering a solution for heating and cooling renovated areas that lack sufficient attic space for traditional ductwork.

Zone Control

mini split The final benefit of ductless mini splits, when compared to alternatives, is zone control. All other options for heating and cooling the home require the temperature to be maintained at a single setpoint determined at one central thermostat. This can make homes particularly uncomfortable in the winter as the thermostat is protected inside the home, and cold air makes its way through walls, creating cool spots. The only way to overcome this is to crank the thermostat up, but if there are only a few rooms occupied in the home at a time, this is wildly inefficient. Doesn't it make more sense to only heat or cool the occupied spaces to the preferred level of comfort?

With ductless mini splits, everyone in the home can set the temperature of their zone. Not only will this keep the home more comfortable for every individual, but it can also keep bills lower by allowing owners to set the thermostats of unoccupied spaces to lower or higher settings, depending on the season.
